Augmentin is prescribed for the treatment of bacterial infections affecting the lower respiratory tract, otitis media, sinusitis, skin infections, and urinary tract infections.
Augmentin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that targets bacteria. It is effective against various aerobic (those that thrive in oxygen) and anaerobic (those that thrive in the absence of oxygen) gram-positive and aerobic gram-negative microorganisms, including strains that produce beta-lactamase (an enzyme that destroys penicillin). The inclusion of clavulanate potassium in this medication helps Augmentin resist the effects of bacterial beta-lactamases. It is used to treat pneumonia and other infections in the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and urogenital systems, as well as infections that arise post-surgery and other conditions.
Avoid using this medication if you are allergic to any penicillin antibiotics, have liver or kidney failure, or mononucleosis. Do not take Augmentin if you have an allergy to its components or other penicillin antibiotics, have infectious mononucleosis, or have a history of liver issues or if you experience yellowing of the eyes or skin as a result of Augmentin.
Potential side effects include dyspepsia, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, nausea, vomiting, liver function issues, hepatitis, jaundice from bile accumulation, vaginal itching, and allergy symptoms (such as hives, rash, and swelling). Caution is advised for individuals with liver failure. This medication is not recommended for pregnant women (particularly in the third trimester) and those who are breastfeeding.
Taking Augmentin alongside other antibiotics may alter the normal bacterial flora of the colon and promote the growth of C. difficile, a bacterium responsible for pseudomembranous colitis. Additionally, probenecid, which treats gout, may slow the excretion of Augmentin by the kidneys, potentially increasing its toxicity.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose. Do not attempt to make up for a missed dose by taking an extra one.
If you suspect you have taken an overdose of Augmentin and experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, skin rash, drowsiness, or hyperactivity, seek immediate medical attention.
